Supporting your baby

Support your baby’s development every day: little moments, big discoveries

You can support your baby’s development by responding attentively to their cues, talking with them and offering safe opportunities to move and explore. This doesn’t require a packed schedule or constantly new toys. Suitable ideas help your child explore their abilities; they cannot make development progress at whatever speed you choose.

What does your baby need right now?

Before choosing an activity, take a moment to look: is your baby seeking your face? Studying their fingers? Trying to reach an object? Start there. Today, a quiet exchange while getting dressed might work better than a new game. If your baby is happily exploring something, you can let them keep going for a while.

Following their interests helps because curiosity and development are connected. Children need opportunities to repeat what occupies their attention. Age gives you a starting point when choosing; what matters is what your baby can engage with right now.

Three starting points for your day

Getting dressed: connection and language. Tell your baby what you’re doing: “Here comes your sweater.” Wait to see whether they look at you or make a sound, and respond. You don’t need to describe every movement. A shared moment can be quiet too. Voice, touch and affection are already part of early play.

During an awake period: room to move. Set up a safe, supervised space on the floor where your baby can move their arms and legs freely. Notice which movements they begin themselves. You don’t have to choose their next position for them: motor development progresses at different rates, and children learn new movements when they’re ready.

While spending time together: an object to explore. Offer an intact grasping toy suitable for their age, for example. Let your baby look, touch and investigate for themselves. Once they can hold the object, watch how they turn it or let it go again. These small attempts are already meaningful play experiences. There’s no need for a whole basket of new things.

How much support is enough?

In everyday life, your baby’s response is more helpful than a minute-by-minute plan. Looking away, yawning or becoming increasingly restless may signal that they need a break. Stop the activity and make room for rest and closeness. Young babies in particular often focus on one thing for only a short time.

A simple starting point: choose one moment that already happens in your day and give it your attention. Afterwards, notice what your baby enjoyed. That can lead to your next idea. You don’t need to tick off a list of developmental areas at the end of the day.

Frequently asked questions

When can I start supporting my baby’s development?

Playing together begins in the first weeks of life with your face, voice and physical closeness. Choose ideas that fit your baby’s abilities and how they’re feeling.

Do I need special developmental toys?

No. Connecting with you, discovering their own hands and exploring suitable, safe objects already offer stimulation. Your baby’s chance to explore for themselves matters more than any particular equipment.

What should I do if I’m worried about development?

Discuss what you’ve noticed with your pediatrician. General play ideas cannot replace an individual assessment. Clear developmental concerns should be assessed by a qualified professional.
